WHAT IS MAT WORK?

The classical Pilates mat work emphasizes the powerhouse (core of the body) and learning to work from the inside out. The mat work strengthens around the joints, leaving the body free to move with the fundamental stabilization it was designed to have from its center. It also teaches a natural range of motion and the body skills to develop strength and flexibility through that range.

WHAT IS FLOOR WORK?

The Ron Fletcher Worktm—specifically the floor and towel work—is introduced as a way to experience the body and breath in a more choreographed way. The floor work teaches awareness about how to use space for movement; builds awareness about alignment and increases range of motion while teaching the body to stabilize from the center. The goal is to create a body that can respond to the focus of the mind and maintain correct alignment through a variety of movements. This class is excellent for learning spontaneous movement and building strength and flexibility through a wide variety of motions.

The Barbara Huttner Training Program

The Barbara Huttner Training Program has been developed over a period of 30 years of teaching and study in the area of dance and exercise. Barbara’s programs have been nationally recognized for their emphasis on overall health and fitness including lifestyle awareness and goals. The philosophy being that body, mind, breath and spirit are all important components of total fitness and in her program they are applied as a way to move, think, feel, breathe and live. Fitness is not just exercising; it is how we live our lives.

Teaching is a process of sharing, constant growth, and learning. Our program is based on past and present information as well as our consultations with physical therapists, orthopedic physicians and many masters of body and movement work. Every body is unique and information about the body is a constantly evolving process. We structure our program to address individual needs as well as to create a foundation of proper alignment, stability, and awareness of the body through motion.

Scientific studies show that variety is important, not only for the mind, but also to prevent overuse injuries. The program encourages teachers to use modifications and provides a broad overview of all the equipment as well as the floor and mat work. The emphasis is on challenging the body in new ways and learning the basis for the movements. The course encourages teachers to be individuals and to be creative within the framework of sound movement principles.

Functional Anatomy, a pre-training course, was created to bring a more comprehensive learning experience for teachers, and is highly recommended for students who want to become more familiar with the basic concepts of the program as they relate to movement awareness. We have found through experience that if you cannot feel a movement (or don’t understand a concept in your own body) it will be difficult for you to teach it. The course introduces ways of cueing the body for correct alignment through motion as well as the development of movement evaluation skills. The course provides an excellent foundation to work effectively with our own physical background, awareness, and constraints as well as those of students.

Barbara’s Equipment Program is based on the work of Joseph H Pilates—the inventor of the equipment—as well as other masters of the work. The Ron Fletcher Worktm is taught as a separate section. The Reformer, Cadillac, Half barrel, High barrel, Chair, Ped a pull, and Magic circle are incorporated to create a balanced program that strengthens around the joints. The intention is to make the body stronger for dance, sports, and every day life in an effective way—not to repeat those sports, dance or movements from other forms of fitness.

Barbara has two training centers for teachers – Denver & Vail. In addition to our training, we sponsor workshops by guest master teachers, and we continue to offer a healthy learning environment for our teachers in training as well as our students.

It is recommended that this course be completed before beginning the Level I training. Texts are required.
